Croft House
Planning approval granted for the conversion of a de-crofted long-house in the Scottish Highlands back to living accomodation after many years of standing abandoned. The concept for this project was to replace the collapsing tin roof structure and stabilise the original stone walls by inserting a steel mezzanine structure housing two extra bedroom spaces to the first floor.
The use of charred larch and corten steel echoes the dramatic palette of the surrounding hills and barns, and creates a clear distinction between the old and new fabric. Strategic insertion of new openings allows for maximised views across the nearby loch and hillside, whilst retaining an understated and humble appearance to the historic structure. The process included negotiations with highways to create a new vehicular access and also provide new on-site sewage package treatment, services and air-source heat pump system.
